Leadership Competency Review of the WA Adventure Activity Standards (AAS)

Over the last couple of years, Outdoors WA received significant, consistent and serious feedback calling for change to the requirements concerning outdoors leaders in the Adventure Activity Standards (AAS). The bulk of concern had been focused on requiring registration in the National Outdoor Leadership Scheme (NOLRS) as the sole way of determining the suitability of outdoor leaders running activities. In response to these concerns, Outdoors WA convened a focus group to make recommended changes to apply across all AAS’s.

Consultation results

The recommendations were put to the outdoor sector with over 130 responses received via the online survey and numerous personal inquiries. The overwhelming majority indicated the need for change.

Next step

The Industry Standards Panel (ISP) has finalised changes to the Adventure Activity Standards and a timeline for implementation within the sector. The process is outlined below.

Thank you!

A big thanks to the outdoor community for those who responded to the consultations and thanks to those who have been a part of the focus group.

Outdoors WA conducts consultation, focus groups and recommendations as part of the continuous improvement process to ensure that the Adventure Activity Standards reflect common safe practice across activities within the outdoor sector.

The initial Industry Training Initiative Report giving support to this review can be found here.
The current WA Adventure Activity Standards can be found here.
