Consultation Mountain Biking Guidelines Released for Comment (closed)

10-Sep-2015

The Mountain Bike Working Group is pleased to release the draft Western Australian Mountain Bike Management Guidelines for public comment.

Mountain biking is one of the most rapidly growing recreational and sporting activities in Western Australia, following similar trends worldwide. With this growth comes a demand for opportunities and trails, with the challenge to provide these in a sustainable way, without degrading environments. The guidelines will assist in providing protection and opportunity in priority locations simultaneously.

The guidelines combine local experience and knowledge, with world’s best practice from the International Mountain Bicycling Association and Dafydd Davis, the renowned trail guru responsible for the development of the legendary Coed-y-Brenin mountain bike park in Wales.

Their development has been a community-based project, facilitated by the Department of Parks and Wildlife. The project was made possible through the commitment of the members of the Mountain Bike Working Group, which consisted of community mountain bikers representing a range of different styles and experience, members of West Australian Mountain Bike Association, and staff from WestCycle, the Departments of Parks and Wildlife, and Sport and Recreation.

The eight community members who volunteered to be a part of the Mountain Bike Working Group deserve special thanks for the many hours they contributed to drafting, reviewing and finalising this document.
