News - Support for Outdoor Learning in National School Curriculum

01-Mar-2017

Launch of Curriculum Connections to the outdoors

There has been some positive news in outdoor education with the launch of a new national online resource that maps outdoor learning across various areas in the Australian Curriculum. It is rewarding to see this long term piece of Outdoors WA work with Outdoor Education Australia coming to fruition. This should assist all teachers in seeing the value that educating outdoors brings to a range of learning areas.

ACARA collaborated with Outdoor Education Australia and its local state representatives like Outdoors WA on the resource, which is designed to assist teachers in developing interdisciplinary programs and support the delivery of the Australian Curriculum.

"The Outdoor Learning Curriculum Connections resource provides engaging and relevant contexts for delivering the Australian Curriculum,” said ACARA CEO, Robert Randall.

“Drawing on content from across learning areas and the three dimensions of the Australian Curriculum can help teachers deliver authentic and meaningful programs through real-world applications. This can increase students’ engagement and deepen their learning.”

You might remember our long term advocacy program to ensure that the value of outdoor learning had some position within the Australian Curriculum. In fact many of you wrote letters and made submissions to ensure that the outdoors was even mentioned. This online resource has been a continual process in the background over the past 2 years, and it is rewarding to see it come online at a national level.

Outdoors WA thanks all of those that have contributed and the number of interstate partners who work alongside us in supporting outdoor education through Outdoor Education Australia. You can find out more on the new OEA website here.

If you are interested in more details on the work we do as part of the Outdoor Education Australia network, please contact us at office(at)outdoorswa.org .
