News - Australian Adventure Activity Standard is launched

18-Nov-2019

Outdoors WA welcomes the release of the final Adventure Activity Stand Good Practice Guides that will provide a good practice framework for safe and responsible planning and delivery of outdoor adventure activities with dependent participants.

They are intended to strike a balance between providing guidance on the safety of dependent participants whilst encouraging behaviour that helps protect our environmental and cultural heritage and respects the rights of other users.

Jamie Bennett - Executive Officer for Outdoors WA explained "This new national approach ensures everyone has clear guidance on how to achieve the highest safety standards and deliver the best possible experience for participants in outdoor activities across Australia. it will enable state peak bodies like Outdoors WA to support and encourage the growth of safe practices across Western Australia. We have a wonderful outdoors sector in WA and want to see more people adventuring outdoors in sustainable ways”

The project has involved over 100 outdoor sector experts working collaboratively across the country. For the first time ever we will have one standard that will make it easier for outdoor providers to operate in multiple jurisdictions, improve professional portability of activity leaders, and improve safety of participants.

For WA given our amazing natural landscape we want to see as many people leading trips outdoors as possible in a safe way. The Australian AAS will provide guidance for the community, commercial and adventure tourism providers.

The Australian Adventure Activity Standard and Good Practice Guides (Aust. AAS) have been funded for several years by the State and Territory Sport and Recreation Ministers of Australia and have been endorsed on 1st November 2019.

The Aust. AAS Steering Committee advises all outdoors sector businesses and community organisations to review the new guidelines now, to assist with keeping their Standard Operating Procedures and related documents and processes in line with good practice.

Each State and Territory public land managers will individually determine whether they will have a rollout date for commercial operators. The Outdoor Council of Australia holds the Australian AAS.

Andrew Knight, Chair of the Australian AAS Committee commented, "Thanks to the support of the State and Territory Sport and Recreation Ministers of Australia, the outdoors sector experts have formed the first-ever national Adventure Activity Standard and Good Practice Guides across 18 activities.

These are as varied as Cycle Touring and Mountain Biking, Climbing and Abseiling, through to Horse Trail Riding, Challenge Ropes, Angling, and Paddle activities. The Australian AAS and GPG’s are a voluntary set of guidelines for led activities with dependent participants.

I also must thank the near-100 volunteer outdoor sector experts from across Australia who assisted for thousands of hours on the Technical Working Groups to work up the Standard and Good Practice Guides with the Secretariat at Outdoors Victoria, overseen by the Australian AAS Steering Committee.”
