Who are we

Outdoors WA is the peak body for the outdoor industry in Western Australia.

The outdoors industry contributes an estimated $1.1 billion in Gross Value Add to the West Australian economy every year and employs 18,500 people.  That’s the same economic contribution as the commercial fishing industry, racing industry and organised sport, yet the outdoors employs the most people of any of these industries.

Since its formation in 2000 Outdoors WA has brought together industry from across outdoor education, adventure tourism and outdoor recreation, to develop capacity and promote access to quality outdoor adventure experiences.

This work has seen the delivery of a range of programs and services including conferences, training, forums, policy submissions, jobs and employment support and adventure activity standards.

We are responsible for the Australian Adventure Activity Standards and Good Practice Guides in WA, a voluntary framework for safe and responsible planning and delivery of led outdoor adventure activities with dependent participants which was supported and funded by a meeting of the State and Territory Sport and Recreation Ministers of Australia.

Importantly, the social contribution of people engaging in the outdoors is significant.  Time spent in the outdoors has been found to have a material impact on peoples’ physical and mental health and has been estimated to reduce the burden on WA’s health system by more than $200 million every year.
